IMTA and Everest Alliance Nepal Sign Landmark MoU to Promote Sustainable Mountain Tourism

Guizhou, China, November 12 2025-The International Mountain Tourism Alliance (IMTA) and Everest Alliance Nepal (EAN) have officially entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen international collaboration in sustainable mountain tourism, environmental conservation, and cultural exchange. The agreement was signed in Guizhou, China, marking a significant milestone in fostering global cooperation for the protection and sustainable development of mountain regions.
The three-year MoU sets out a comprehensive framework for partnership between IMTA, the world’s first international organization dedicated to mountain tourism and EAN, a Nepal-based organization devoted to sustainable mountaineering tourism practices, promoting environmental preservation through a strong network of esteemed mountaineers and nature enthusiasts while also enhancing mountain communities through skill training’s and workshops
The collaboration aims to integrate environmental stewardship with adventure tourism by promoting responsible practices in mountain climbing, outdoor adventure sports, rescue training, environmental protection, and cultural exchange. Both organizations share a vision to safeguard mountain ecosystems and empower communities that depend on mountain resources.
IMTA, recognized globally for its mission to protect mountain resources, preserve mountain civilization, and promote sustainable mountain economies, expressed its commitment to advancing eco-conscious tourism through partnerships like this. Similarly, EAN reaffirmed its dedication to uniting local and international efforts for the conservation and sustainable management of the Himalayas and other mountainous regions.
Under the MoU, both parties have agreed to collaborate in four major areas including exchange programs related to mountaineers, trainers, and technical experts in sustainable mountaineering and safety management, joint rescue demonstarations, leadership workshops and outdoor safety trainings will be conducted with a focus on eco-friendly practices.
Similarly, IMTA and EAN will co-organize and participate in international climbing expeditions, cultural festivals, adventure competitions, and conferences that promote sustainability and cross-cultural understanding. Events will include eco-friendly mountaineering competitions, sustainable adventure races, and cultural exhibitions emphasizing traditional ecological knowledge and responsible tourism.
Both parties will also exchange expertise and best practices in outdoor adventure management, environmental risk assessment, and sustainable tourism. Training and mentorship programs will be developed to support young climbers and guides, promoting environmental awareness and responsible leadership within the mountaineering community.
Furthermore, the MoU emphasizes environmental protection through joint campaigns for waste management, trail maintenance, and clean-up drives in mountain regions. Educational programs and community engagement initiatives will also be launched to raise awareness about climate change, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable trekking. In addition, both parties will collaborate on research projects aimed at mitigating the environmental impacts of adventure activities and sharing findings globally to enhance sustainability standards in mountain tourism.
The signing of this MoU marks the beginning of a dynamic partnership that bridges global expertise with local action. With EAN’s field experience in the Himalayas and IMTA’s international platform, the collaboration is expected to play a vital role in shaping the future of responsible adventure tourism and environmental conservation in mountain regions around the world.
The MoU was signed during the International Conference of Mountain Tourism and Outdoor Sports 2025 concluded successfully in Guiyang City, Guizhou Province, China, under the theme “Integration of Culture, Tourism and Sports Presents a High Quality Life held on November 11.”
The event brought together over 350 participants from 30 countries and regions, marking a major step in advancing sustainable mountain tourism worldwide.

Key activities included the IMTA Annual Conference, International Mountain Tourism Promotion Conference, and a Mountain Culture and Outdoor Sports Exhibition. Opening remarks were delivered by IMTA Chairman Dominique de Villepin, Lu Yongzheng of the CPC Guizhou Provincial Committee, and Zhu Shanzhong, UN Tourism Ambassador.
During the conference, IMTA also signed Memorandums of Cooperation with the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), and other institutions, and released a special publication titled Innovation in Mountain Tourism and Community Co-development. Awards were also presented to eight “World Famous Tourism Mountains” and six “International Mountain Hiking Demonstration Routes.”
