Kathmandu, Nepal – BYD, the world’s leading new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer, has achieved a major global milestone as cumulative sales of the BYD Dolphin electric hatchback surpassed 1 million units worldwide. The Dolphin has also become the fastest EV hatchback in China to reach the million-sales mark.
The global success is strongly reflected in Nepal, where the BYD Dolphin has rapidly established itself as the country’s top-selling hatchback across all powertrains. Introduced in September 2023 by Cimex Inc. Pvt. Ltd., the authorized distributor of BYD Auto Industry Co. Ltd. in Nepal, the Dolphin has played a transformative role in the nation’s electric mobility journey.
Despite a broader decline in Nepal’s hatchback segment, the BYD Dolphin has revived consumer interest by offering advanced safety, intelligent technology, and strong value for money. According to Cimex, more than 2,500 BYD Dolphins are currently on Nepali roads, making it one of the most successful electric vehicles in the country within a short period.
Positioned as a “Safe & Smart Family Car,” the BYD Dolphin is built on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 and features a rigid body structure with 78.2 percent high-strength steel. The vehicle is powered by BYD’s globally recognized Blade Battery, known for its high safety standards, durability, and efficiency.
Inside, the Dolphin offers a modern and family-oriented driving experience with a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system, BYD app connectivity with mobile NFC key, and a spacious cabin supported by a 2700 mm wheelbase. The car is also equipped with BYD’s DiPilot Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), which includes features such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure assistance.
Industry observers note that the Dolphin’s success has helped revive Nepal’s hatchback segment by introducing global EV technology at an accessible price point and attracting both first-time EV buyers and family car upgraders.
Commenting on the achievement, a spokesperson for Cimex Inc. Pvt. Ltd. said the 1 million global sales milestone is a matter of pride for Nepal as well. The spokesperson added that the company remains committed to expanding the EV ecosystem, strengthening after-sales services, and supporting Nepal’s transition toward clean and sustainable mobility.
Looking ahead, BYD has already begun development testing of the next-generation 2026 BYD Dolphin in China. Early indications suggest notable improvements in design and driving dynamics, further strengthening the Dolphin’s global and regional appeal.
